Why We Created an Art and Gift Store Celebrating Bristol

The story about why we created an online store for art, souvenirs and presents inspired by Bristol's beauty.

If you've visited Bristol, you can't escape its vibrant and diverse art scene. Bristol art is all around you - from street murals and graffiti to its contemporary galleries and performance spaces. Some of the most famous street artists to come out of Bristol include Banksy, who began his career in the city, and 3D, a member of the trip-hop group Massive Attack.

Another aspect of Bristol's art scene that sets it apart is its focus on sustainability and social responsibility. Many of the city's galleries and performance spaces prioritize eco-friendly practices and use their platforms to raise awareness about critical social issues. For example, the Bristol Old Vic, one of the city's oldest and most prestigious theaters, commits to sustainability and regularly hosts productions that tackle issues such as climate change and inequality.

However, we find ourselves most inspired by its unique architecture when we visit Bristol. Walking around the city, you cannot help but be in awe of its beautiful buildings - some of Britain's finest examples of Georgian and Victorian architecture, carefully preserved over the centuries.

This beauty and creativity inspired us to open an art and gift store celebrating Bristol. In this article, we will walk you through my three favorite places in Bristol - Clifton, Bedminster, and St. Nicholas Market, and show you how we reflected their beauty in our original art.

Clifton - The Cultural Quarter of Bristol

Clifton is one of Bristol's most iconic and vibrant districts, known for its unique mix of architecture, art, and culture. Some of the best Bristol art galleries and performance spaces featuring modern and contemporary artwork from around the world are located in Clifton. Clifton is known as Bristol's "cultural quarter," with plenty of options to explore the city through its art scene. From galleries to independent shops, Clifton has something for everyone - even if you're not an art lover!

One of the most striking aesthetic features of Clifton is its Georgian architecture. Many of the neighborhood's buildings were constructed in the 18th and 19th centuries, characterized by their elegant, symmetrical facades and large windows. These buildings, which include townhouses, churches, and schools, are often adorned with decorative details such as Corinthian columns and pediments.

The artwork above takes inspiration from Clifton's buildings in Winter. Although Bristol hasn't seen Winter snow in years due to climate change, the artwork captures the beauty of Clifton's Georgian architecture at night, with its warm lighting and soft snowflakes.

Another notable architectural feature of Clifton is its suspension bridge. Constructed in 1864, the Clifton Suspension Bridge spans the Avon Gorge and is an iconic landmark of Bristol. Designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, one of the most famous engineers of the Victorian era, the bridge is a masterpiece of engineering and a testament to the ingenuity of its creator.

Bedminster - The Victorian Enclave

Bedminster is a neighborhood in Bristol known for its diverse architectural styles and vibrant community. Located just south of the city center, Bedminster is a mix of residential and commercial areas, with various shops, restaurants, and cafes along its main streets.

One of Bedminster's most striking architectural features is its Victorian-era terraced houses. These row houses, built in the 19th century, are characterized by their narrow, multi-story facades and decorative details such as stained glass windows and intricate brickwork. Many of these houses have been beautifully preserved and are now listed buildings, protected by the government for their historical significance.

Bedminster is a neighborhood teeming with architectural diversity. Its collection of Victorian terraced houses, industrial buildings, and modern structures make it an ideal place for architecture aficionados or those interested in design. If you're ever in Bristol, meander through Bedminster and marvel at its one-of-a-kind personality.

St Nicholas Market - Home of the Bustle

St Nicholas Market is a beloved Bristol landmark located in the heart of the city center. The market dates back to 1743, when it was established as a weekly market for selling livestock and produce. In recent years, however, the market has become an exciting hub for Bristolians and visitors to explore Bristol’s unique culture.

The market is split into two distinct sections: St Nicholas High Street and Corn Street. The latter comprises numerous independent shops, restaurants, cafes, and galleries along a pedestrianized street. Here one can find vintage clothing stores, Bristol-made products such as pottery and jewelry, local artisan foods like cheeses and sausages, and more! We tried to capture the spirit of the Market in this artwork.

The other section of St Nicholas Market – St Nicholas High Street – features a variety of stalls selling everything from second-hand books to antiques. You'll also find live music performances here during weekends (weather permitting), so it’s worth catching!

Whether you're visiting Bristol or just taking a stroll around the city center, take some time out for St Nicholas Market – you won't regret it! Whether you want to soak up its rich history through its architecture or discover hidden gems at its stalls – there's something here for everyone!

Celebrating Bristol Art

We wanted to produce a range of wall art and other giftable items that celebrate Bristol's unique aesthetic and architectural heritage. So we opened Bristol Unique, an online art shop where we design original artwork and deliver it on premium canvas prints, museum-quality posters, and other giftable items.

All our designs are original, and we are committed to offering something unique that strikes a chord with people who live here and those who visit.
